Congrats on the job change! Corporate Event Planners


The event planning industry has been rapidly changing. From technology to entertainment, event professionals aren’t simply just “planners” anymore. The role has completely redefined itself. The expectations of clients, attendees, media and even ourselves have created a skills gap. If event planners aren’t and haven’t been willing to adapt to this changing environment, they’ve likely been surpassed by those that see the opportunities available.

Gone are the days when an event planner could make a few quick calls, send out an invitation, ensure the entertainment shows up, and call it day. Event Planning Trends have changed. If you aren’t adapting, you’re standing still… and that’s never a good feeling. Here are a few ways the event planner “job description” has changed and how you can stay ahead of the curve AND the competition:

1. The Experience Creator
A event where attendees show up, go through the motions and head home is a recipe for failure. Your audience expects to be overcome by a fun, engaging experience from the moment they receive your first invitation to the time they step foot on site. You’re not just putting on an event; you’re creating an experience that captivates, inspires, entertains and leaves people wanting more!

2. The Planner 2.0
Whether it’s through email, Facebook, Twitter or mobile, everyone is connected. While print and snail mail are still great, that alone won’t cut it. The experience we just mentioned… it’s fueled by technology. Your audience wants to be engaged – with your event and those in attendance. Instead of the same old print agenda or name card, opt for a digital version that ties in social media, real-time feedback, unique content and entertainment on-the-go.

3. The Entertainment Agent
Years ago, entertainment could have been an after-thought. Hire a local comedian or band just so you could cross it off your “to-do” list. Today, entertainment is a focal point. Some argue that success depends on it. The entertainment you hire helps create that unforgettable feeling, influences the atmosphere, puts smiles on people’s faces and will define the experience. But you can’t just reach into a hat and pull out an entertainer (unless you’re a magician!). You have to carefully choose the appropriate type and style based on your individual event. Put some additional thought into the entertainment you choose, because finding the perfect fit can separate an OK event from an outstanding one!

With all these new job titles, it’s easy to see how quickly you need to adapt to stay ahead of the curve. Instead of just being a planner, you’re now expected to be a Jack-or-Jill-of-all-trades — a technology whiz who understands the impact entertainment can have on an event and how to create an experience that is unlike anything anyone has seen before.
