Gerry Elvis Barrett “The Big Bear”is a stand-up comedian and Elvis Presley Tribute Artist. Barrett is one of Canada’s favorite Aboriginal stand-up comedians, and quite likely the only Aboriginal Elvis impersonator in Canada. Gerry Barrett is a proud Ojibway from the Saugeen First Nation.

Experience: Gerry Elvis Barrett has performed on the Comedy Network, CBC television, and on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. He has also performed as the King of Rock and Roll at the Collingwood Elvis Festival, and in Las Vegas. In 2004 he made television history by performing North America’s first all Aboriginal stand-up comedy special; CBC’s Welcome to Turtle Island. His comedy credits also include performances at The Laugh Factory in Hollywood in 2004, where he showcased for the NBC network. Gerry had his own television special on Aboriginal Peoples Television Network called The Big Bear Comedy Show, and he has appeared on First Nations communities across Canada and the US, as well as an appearance at The Winnipeg Comedy Festival that was shown across Canada on CBC-TV.

In 2008, Gerry lived out a life-long dream and performed as Elvis onstage in Las Vegas at the Imperial Hotel and Casino. Barrett travelled to Washington, D.C. and performed at the Native Nations Inaugural Ball on Jan. 21, 2013 at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. When not on tour with his comedy, Gerry “The Big Bear” Barrett is the Morning Host on Manitoba’s Aboriginal Radio Network, NCI-FM.

Performance Style: Gerry’s corporate friendly aboriginal stand-up comedy show is 60 minutes in length and is jam packed with clever humour and funny songs! Gerry also offers a 30 minute tribute to Elvis Presley. Dressed in a custom-made jumpsuit, Gerry recreates ELVIS: 1974.

“Most of my stand up routine is based on sharing my Aboriginal Canadian life experience,” typed Winnipeg-based Barrett in an email. “I’ve tried to cover as many issues that have affected me as I grew up ‘Canadian’, a lot issues of course the average Canadian has never experienced, or perhaps don’t even know about: The 60’s Scoop, (Canada’s dirty little secret), foster homes, my adoption, racism, my loss of cultural identity, my loss of Ojibwe tradition and language. Canada is going through some major changes when it comes to every Canadian becoming aware of Aboriginal issues. Up until a month ago, no one had even heard of Kashechewan, let alone be able to pronounce it.” — Gerry Elvis Barrett

“He is relaxed, funny and obviously enjoying himself. His easy laughter seduces the audience and his edgy, slightly dangerous commentary creates the necessary dynamic that a stand up must have with his audience.”
Winnipeg Free Press

“On the evening of the performance, we found Gerry to not only be punctual, professional and naturally funny, but we also found him to be highly in tune to the likes and dislikes of the audience. His uncanny ability to read what makes an audience laugh, allowed him to gear his demeanor and material towards the audience, thus bringing him great success throughout the entire performance.”
