Theresa Sokyrka is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan who placed second in Season 2 of Canadian Idol.
Experience: Theresa Sokyrka (pronounced S0-CARE-ka) was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Sonia and Harold Sokyrka. Some of Theresa’s earliest memories include those of her family and friends gathering in the Sokyrka household to sing traditional Ukrainian Folk Songs. The Sokyrka family moved to Saskatoon in 1989 where Theresa attended the Ukrainian Bilignual Program at St. Goretti School. She also took voice and violin lessons and was lead soloists with the Lastiwka Ukrainian Youth Choir.
Theresa’s late teens and early 20s were spent flirting with folk bands and attending Red Deer College for music. Her breakthrough, however, came when she placed second in season two of Canadian Idol 2004 and subsequently released the album These Old Charms in 2005 and sold over 65,000 certifying a Gold Status. Her second album “Something is Expected” she signed with MapleMusic to release an all original pop album working with producers Mike Timmins, John Collins and David Carswell. Sokyrka produced a brilliant collection of traditional folk songs on a Ukrainian Roots Album in 2010 in Montreal.
Theresa Sokyrka has had the opportunity to open for Matt Dusk, Charlotte Cornfield, Miss Emily Brown, and David Gray. She was nominated for a Juno in 2006 and was the Youth Ambassador for Saskatchewan in it’s centennial year. In June of 2013, Sokyrka produced and released her fifth studio record “Prairie Winds” a collection of wispy, poetic melodies that were recorded, mixed and mastered in one week in Madrid. Sokyrka always wanted to make an album that was free from edits and this stellar, sonic beauty proves she has matured into a pretty decent songwriter and has learned a thing or two about producing as well. She toured the album from Victoria to Charlottetown in May/June of 2013 with fellow colleague Michelle Sabourin (Edmonton) and proved to her fans old and new that though it’s been almost 11 years since a reality TV show found her in Saskatoon, Sokyrka is sticking around for the long haul.
Theresa Sokyrka’s Musical Style: Theresa is drawn to the blues and jazz more than other musical genres, and sings with passion and vulnerability. She loves to scat, adding flare and style to her songs. During an Idol taping, Lionel Richie said there was “the soul of an old black woman living inside her”.
Theresa Sokyrka’s Appearances: Theresa has been selling out her concerts across Western Canada including a performance with the Regina Symphony Big Band. She has been featured on several nationally televised broadcasts including “Canada A.M”; “E-Talk Daily”, ” Vicki Gabereau”, “CTV National News”, “NewsNet”, “CTV Evening News”, “Shaw Cable Saskatoon”, “Rawlco Radio” ( C-95 FM, 650 AM) , CBC, and Magic ’98 FM , Z- 99 as well as several other radios stations across Canada . Due to her strong Ukrainian cultural heritage, she has been interviewed by “CBC Radio International” – which was broadcast into Ukraine in February 2005.
