Types Of Comedy Styles Performed By Comedians


Like all forms of entertainment, there isn’t just one type of comedian. There are many different types of comedians offering their own comedy style. When looking to hire a comedian for an event, it is helpful to know the different comedy styles to ensure you hire a comedian who is the right fit for your event.

Observational Comedy: This comedy style pokes fun at everyday life, often by inflating the importance of trivial things or by observing the silliness of something that society accepts as normal

Topical Comedy/Satire: This type of comedy style relies on headlining important news and current affairs. It dates quickly, but is a popular form for late night talk-variety shows.

Prop Comedy: Comedians performing prop comedy use various props (objects) to get people to laugh.

Political Comedy. This comedy style looks at the humourous side of the news and politics. Political comedians follow what is going on in the world of politics to extract the hilarious content for their performances.

Improv Comedy: This comedic style involves one or more comedians making things up as they go along. A typical improv show might accept a suggestion from the audience and immediately act out a sketch based on that suggestion.

Musical Comedy: Performed by musical comedians, typical performances include music and hilarious stand-up comedy.

Magic Comedy: Comedians that perform this type of comedy offer a hilarious comedic performance along with magic tricks.

Character Comedy: This comedy style involves the comedian performing like the character she or he has created. Much of character comedy comes from stereotypes.

Humorist Comedy: A humorist comedian performs material that is considered humorous, The material is intellectual and subtle, and there is a point or message in the material.
